Shakib Al Hasan, the renowned Bangladesh all-rounder, recently disclosed his struggle with blurred vision during his leadership role in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. He recounted facing considerable discomfort, especially in one side of his left eye, while playing in the tournament.
"I experienced blurred vision consistently throughout the World Cup, making it challenging to face the ball," Shakib conveyed to Cricbuzz. "The issue persisted throughout the tournament, affecting my ability to perform," he added, discussing the discomfort caused by the blurred vision.
Upon seeking medical advice, it was revealed that there was some fluid in his cornea or retina, and he was advised to reduce stress levels. However, when re-examined in the United States, the stress-related concern was dismissed. Shakib highlighted the absence of stress following the World Cup, indicating its potential influence on his condition.
Despite his stature as a pivotal player for the team, Shakib encountered difficulties finding his form with the bat during the tournament, tallying only 186 runs. However, amidst the setbacks, he showcased a glimmer of hope with a crucial 82-run performance against Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh's World Cup journey took an unexpected turn, facing consecutive defeats, including a startling 87-run loss to the Netherlands, deemed by Shakib as their "worst ever" World Cup defeat.
Amid mounting frustrations, Shakib's challenges escalated when he sustained a fracture in his left index finger during a match against Sri Lanka. This injury hindered his participation in subsequent national team fixtures, including the Test series against New Zealand and subsequent white-ball engagements.
As part of a strategic decision, Shakib opted out of the IPL 2024 auction and the PSL draft, redirecting his focus towards international cricket. He expressed his commitment to prioritize national duties, signaling a strong determination to represent Bangladesh once again on the international stage.
