Faf du Plessis Points to Bounce as Key Factor in Indian Batters Struggle in South Africa

Faf attributed India's past difficulties to the unique bounce characteristics of South African pitches, notably distinct from the conditions in the subcontinent.

Faf du Plessis, the former South African skipper, shed light on the enduring challenge Indian batsmen face in South African conditions, highlighting the critical factor behind India's historical struggles in securing a Test series victory in the Rainbow Nation. The upcoming series under Rohit Sharma's leadership carries the potential for a groundbreaking achievement for India.

Faf attributed India's past difficulties to the unique bounce characteristics of South African pitches, notably distinct from the conditions in the subcontinent. He emphasized the significant difference in bounce, almost a full hand's height, posing an added challenge for Indian batsmen habituated to lower bounce levels back home.

"The bounce factor plays a huge role. There's a significant increase in bounce, almost a full hand's height, compared to what Indian batsmen usually encounter in their home conditions. Their accustomed style of hitting the ball on the up encounters added risk here due to the bounce and lateral movement," Faf explained to The Indian Express.

In providing strategic guidance, Faf emphasized the importance of mastering the skill of leaving deliveries effectively on these surfaces. Stressing patience and adaptability, he recalled the closely contested 2018 series where India exhibited resilience by adeptly leaving deliveries, coming close to a breakthrough victory.

"The 2018 series was a close encounter, and India showcased exceptional discipline in leaving deliveries. This is crucial for success in South African conditions. Patience and respecting the conditions are key. It's imperative to devise a plan on handling the shorter deliveries with extra bounce and executing proficient leave strategies," Faf reflected, highlighting the quintessential elements for a successful Test outing in South Africa.
