50 years on, India batsmen spoil golden memories with insipid show
The past month has witnessed reams being published over the historic four-wicket surprise win 50 years ago.
Among the pitches in England, the one at The Oval is the most batting-friendly. So it came as massive surprise that Indian batting crumbled the way it did, showing not a semblance of feet movement. In fact, if India aren't able to fight back in the ongoing Test, this will be yet another instance of India returning from the venue without a Test win.
US Open: Medvedev breezes past Koepfer to enter 3rd round
Medvedev broke Koepfer's serve seven times. The tall Russian also defended better in the match. "I try to take every match as a new challenge. The more I win throughout my career, and especially here in New York, on this stadium, the better I will feel," said Medvedev after the match. "It was a great level from me," he added.
I still get goosebumps when India play Pak: Sehwag
Sehwag had walked into bat at No. 7 and was dismissed for just one by speedster Shoaib Akhtar. "I was around 20-21 years old then. When I went in to bat, the players like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Yousuf, and all other Pakistan team members, welcomed me by abusing me a lot. I even didn't know some of the bad words they used,"
Virat Kohli fastest to 23,000 runs in international cricket
Kohli, who was on 22,999 at the start of his innings on Thursday, cracked a four of James Anderson's bowling to go past 23,000 runs in international cricket in just his 490th innings. This is 32 innings less than what former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar to get to the milestone. The Mumbai maestro took 522 innings to get to the mark.
Imran's message to Akram was to bounce the s**t out of me: Shastri
"Imran Khan is one of the greatest captains and players the game has seen. Why I hold this view hardly needs qualification. His records speak of itself and if at all further validation is necessary, it comes from the experience of those who played with or against him," Shastri wrote. Khan played 88 Test matches, 126 innings and scored 3,807 runs at an average of 37.69, including six centuries and 18 fifties. His highest score was 136.
Fourth Test: India hit back after being dismissed for 191
India, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Shardul Thakur managed to get close to 200. At 127/7, it seemed that England would dismiss India for below 150. However, Thakur, the medium-pace bowling all-rounder played audacious shots to chip in with 57 off 36 balls to give the total some modesty.
4th Test: India crumble to 122/6 against relentless England seamers
India, who lost three wickets in the first session, lost three more in the second session. Ravindra Jadeja, promoted to No. 5, was out in the slips off the bowling of Chris Woakes for 10. Then, skipper Virat Kohli, who looked the best of the Indian batsmen, was caught behind off Ollie Robinson for 50. This was Kohli's 27th Test half-century and comprised eight fours.
4th Test: England pacers blow away top three of India's batting
The Indian openers started well to reach 28/0 in first seven overs, especially with K.L. Rahul playing some lovely drives. But Chris Woakes, introduced in the ninth over, dismissed Rohit Sharma (11) with an absolute peach of a delivery. Nipping off the pitch with extra bounce from short of length, Woakes forced Sharma to play at it. The ball took the outer edge of the shoulder of the bat to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.
India leave out R Ashwin once again
What makes the decision surprising is that England have four left-handers in their line-up -- including three who are known for their batting. Ashwin has an impeccable record against left-handers. Out of the 413 Test wickets he has taken, 211 are left-handers. "They are not playing an extra batsman. They are playing five bowlers and still not playing R Ashwin. That is surprising," said former India pace bowler Ajit Agarkar.
