The 28-year old has not bowled since the Men's T20 World Cup in November, and is still struggling with the niggle. He does not have sufficient bowling loads under his belt to be cleared to play. "Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the 3-match #BetwayTestSeries due to a persistent injury," said CSA in a tweet. The CSA also said that no replacement would be brought in for Nortje, who has been South Africa's premier fast bowler across formats in recent times.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) posted a squad update on twitter on Tuesday, saying, "Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the 3-match #BetwayTestSeries due to a persistent injury (Ambulance symbol)." It also said that no replacement would be brought in for the 28-year-old right-arm fast bowler, who bowled some of the fastest deliveries in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 for Delhi Capitals.

Ashwin, who is currently on the tour of South Africa for a three-Test series, has said that between 2017 and 2019, he first got struck by an injury called patellar tendonitis, which made even walking "excruciatingly painful", and with the pain never really going away, he even contemplated retirement. The tall off-spinner added that people were not "sensitive enough" when he was passing through that phase and they started doubting his intent and willingness to fight, which hurt him.
