Bumrah moves to 9th, Shami 17th in ICC Test rankings after win over Proteas

Bumrah made a three-spot jump to ninth after finishing with five wickets in the Test (2/16 and 3/50), and Mohammad Shami (5/16 and 3/63) moved two places to 17th after his eight wickets over the course of the match, including five in the first innings. Ravichandran Ashwin continues to retain his second spot in the rankings behind Australian pacer Pat Cummins.

At stumps, South Africa were still trailing India by 167 runs at the Wanderers here on Monday. On a day on which eleven wickets fell for overall 237 runs, South Africa kept themselves on top after a solid bowling performance helped them restrict India to 202. After being bowled out for a modest score, Mohammed Shami gave India the first breakthrough as Aiden Markram was trapped plumb in front of the wicket. Shami got the ball to skid in from a good length and Markram tried to defend but was beaten and struck on the pads.

For India, stand-in skipper KL Rahul made a fighting fifty while Ravichandran Ashwin missed his half-century by four runs in a batting display where the middle-order, minus an injured Virat Kohli, failed to get going. But the similarities ended there as India got starts but co'ldn't stitch a big partnership which meant they had to settle for a modest total.

Kohli, who has been struggling a prolonged lean patch with the bat, will thus not be able to complete his landmark 100th Test in the series' third and final match at Cape Town. Speaking to Zee News, Harbhajan said that the decision to drop him from the national side was not that of the then Indian captain M.S. Dhoni but of certain board officials. He further added that Dhoni might not have had a say in the decision (to drop him) but the final call lay with the board members which cannot be overruled by anyone, be it the captain or the coach. "Yes. MS Dhoni was the captain then but I think this thing was above Dhoni's head," he added.
