Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has suggested that differences between men's head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are creating uncertainty within the Indian team, with contrasting priorities influencing selection decisions and affecting the dressing-room atmosphere.
According to Karthik, Agarkar is focused on building the side with a long-term vision, while Gambhir is determined to secure immediate results. He believes the differing approaches have resulted in inconsistent team selections and left players uncertain about their place in the squad.
India's recent T20I defeats against Ireland and England have added to those concerns. Although the selectors included promising youngsters such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the squad, India fielded what was largely considered their strongest playing XI throughout the Ireland series, where experimentation had been anticipated, and suffered a 2-0 defeat. Changes were introduced only during the England series, with Sooryavanshi making his debut in the second T20I before being left out again ahead of the fifth match.
“A bit of friction between the chief selector, I feel, who has long-term plans, and a current coach who is saying, you know, I want to win every game that I play, and hence the confusion that we can see unfold in front of us," Karthik said on Sky Sports. “Is it ideal for the players? Definitely not. I mean, if you’re from India, imagine the kind of bench strength India has. Everybody’s thinking, ‘Oh my God, if I have a couple of bad games, anybody could replace me.’ … It’s definitely a situation that India needs to be aware of and try to rectify as soon as possible."
Similar concerns have also been voiced by former India cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Kaif. Both argued that a tour expected to provide clarity over India's future combinations instead left players such as Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lacking confidence because neither received sufficient opportunities to establish themselves.
Apart from the selection debate, concerns have also emerged over the batting unit's recent performances. Observers have pointed to a noticeable decline in the team's effectiveness with the bat, attributing it in large part to the batting-friendly pitches used during the Indian Premier League. According to this view, those conditions have encouraged habits that are exposed when batters encounter more demanding international surfaces.
