Nortje and Ngidi Return to South Africa's Squad for Champions Trophy

After missing the entire home international season, Nortje and Ngidi are back in the Proteas ODI squad. While Nortje fully recovered from a left toe injury, Ngidi recovered from a groin injury to make a comeback to action.

Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi return as South Africa recall fast bowling duo for the 2025 Champions Trophy starting from February 19. South Africa are in Group B of the Champions Trophy, which will include Afghanistan, Australia, and England.

South Africa has announced their 15-man squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, to be led by Temba Bavuma. Ten of them had been part of the semi-finals qualifying squad during the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup in India. Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder are selected for the first senior 50-over ICC tournament.

“This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this. We’ve managed to maintain the core group of our 2023 World Cup squad, whilst adding fresh talent.”

“Our recent performances at ICC events show that we’re capable of reaching the latter stages of global tournaments. We’re eager to take the next step and go even further in pursuit of the coveted silverware,” said head coach Rob Walter.

Cricket South Africa also confirmed that their high-performance batting lead Imraan Khan will form part of the support staff during the Champions Trophy as a batting coach. "We're also looking forward to Imraan joining our support staff. He will be a great asset as we look to strengthen our batting and continue improving as a unit," said Walter.

South Africa will kick-start their campaign against Afghanistan on 21st February in Karachi and then move on to Rawalpindi for their second group game against Australia on 15th February. Then, they return back to Karachi to face England on the final group match day, March 1.

The top two teams in group A and B qualify for the semi-finals. It is an eight-team tournament that will be played in Pakistan and the UAE, being played for the first time since 2017. Pakistan are the current holders of the trophy, having beaten India in the final at the Oval.

CSA also added the Proteas team to play the prior tri-series of hosts Pakistan and New Zealand which will be from February 8-14. The same team would be released.
