The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has launched strict action on a security blunder during New Zealand vs. Bangladesh's ICC Champions Trophy in Rawalpindi, wherein a fan invades the pitch and tries to hug Kiwi batter Rachin Ravindra.
Security officials immediately responded, ejecting the intruder, who was subsequently arrested. The PCB has now imposed a lifetime ban on the person, prohibiting him from entering any cricket ground in Pakistan.
"The PCB is seriously concerned about the security lapse that occurred during the match. The safety of players and officials is our top priority. We have met with local security authorities, who have promised us an enhanced personnel presence around the ground and tightened access control arrangements at all venues," the board said.
The release also asserted that "the accused was nabbed and produced before court on Tuesday. Moreover, he has been barred for life from watching any cricket match in Pakistan. The PCB is working with security agencies and venue authorities to enhance measures and prevent such incidents in the future."
Though pitch invasions are not uncommon in cricket, this incident has raised eyebrows, especially since Pakistan is hosting its first ICC event since the 1996 ODI World Cup. The PCB has, in turn, pledged to enhance security measures in consultation with the concerned authorities.
Though there was the disturbance, New Zealand was not to be shaken, with Rachin Ravindra's incredible knock of 112 leading his team into the semi-finals. It also ended Pakistan's chances of advancing, as they were beaten for the second time in as many games against New Zealand, following their previous loss to India.
