Sunday gave Carlos Alcaraz a stiff test at Wimbledon, but the Spaniard proceeded to pass it by 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 over Ugo Humbert to seal his quarterfinal place—the ninth time he has done so in a major.
Though there were several moments when Humbert seemed to dominate, Alcaraz digressed at the important moments with characteristic brilliance to help him absorb pressure from the 16th seed and take a step closer to perhaps defending his Wimbledon title, according to atptour.com.
"Playing against a left-handed player is always tough. I had a match before at Queen's against a lefty and it helped me learn a lot. I felt good on court today, really good, and playing a high level," Alcaraz said.
That hard-fought victory lasted two hours and 59 minutes under the roof at Centre Court, taking Nadal level with his coach and former major champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, who became the third-most frequent quarter-final appearance-maker by Spaniards in the Open Era at a Grand Slam.
