Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, faced a tough challenge from French player Ugo Humbert but managed to secure a spot in the men's singles quarterfinals at Wimbledon on Sunday.
The 21-year-old Alcaraz displayed his prowess by clinching the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 in impressive fashion. However, he encountered difficulties in the third set, where Humbert broke his serve three times, leading to a 6-1 loss for Alcaraz.
In the fourth set, both players experienced fluctuations in their performance. Despite this, Alcaraz, a three-time Grand Slam winner from Spain, capitalized on crucial points to eventually prevail 7-5, according to Xinhua.
Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz acknowledged the challenges posed by Humbert, particularly in reading his serves and shots. "It was tough for me to find solutions at that moment," he admitted. "But that's tennis. I managed to elevate my game and intensity in the fourth set, which helped me secure the win."
Elsewhere, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner dominated his match against American Ben Shelton, securing a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(9) victory in just over two hours.
In another match, Russia's fifth seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to the next round as Bulgarian veteran Grigor Dimitrov retired while trailing 5-3 in the first set.
Women's singles saw the unfortunate retirement of 12th seed Madison Keys due to injury during her match against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. Paolini, the seventh seed, will now face off against American 19th seed Emma Navarro, who defeated U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3.
Additionally, New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun continued her remarkable journey at Wimbledon, upsetting former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu of Britain 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Sun, 23, had earlier caused a stir by defeating China's eighth seed Zheng Qinwen in the first round, marking her debut Grand Slam main draw victory.
Reflecting on her journey so far, Sun expressed gratitude for each opportunity to compete against such talented players. “Playing all these players up until now, it’s just a new opportunity each time. I’m super grateful to be able to play another match,” said Sun.
