India are in deep trouble after losing a few quick wickets in the ongoing fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.
India completed the second day of the Boxing Day Test on 164/5 in 46 overs in their first innings with Rishabh Pant (6) and Ravindra Jadeja (4) still at the crease. They are still 310 runs behind and need a commendable effort to avoid follow-on.
Visitors lost skipper Rohit Sharma (3) and KL Rahul early in the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli bailed out the team from trouble and looked promising in the middle.
Jaiswal and Kohli stitched a 102-run stand for the third wicket with the former scoring his second half-century of the series. The left-handed batter was looking in great rhythm and even scored some impressive boundaries to entertain the MCG crowd.
Just when everything was going well for India, a huge misunderstanding led to Jaiswal's run-out dismissal out of nowhere.
In the 41st over, bowled by Scott Boland, Jaiswal straight-batted it mid-on and went on for the single. Kohli did not take the call, but Jaiswal had been that far outside his crease when Cummins chucked it to Alex Carey. Jaiswal departed in the most unfortunate way.
Jaiswal got dismissed for 82 runs off 118 balls on the back of 11 fours and a six. His dismissal triggered a mini-collapse for India.
Kohli, who looked magnificent for his 36 runs with four boundaries, had a lapse in concentration and once again fell prey to Scott Boland's outside off-stump trap.
Soon Boland doubled his tally as he dismissed Akash Deep for 0 in his very next over with Nathan Lyon taking a remarkable catch.
Earlier, Australia continued from their overnight score of 311 and went on to score 474 before getting bowled out in 122.4 overs.
Steve Smith once again put up a batting masterclass in Melbourne and smashed his 34th Test century, his 11th against India. He played a 140-run knock with the help of 13 fours and three sixes.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets whereas Ravindra Jadeja found three scalps.
