Pacer Akash Deep produced a sensational bowling display to take 6 for 99 in England's second innings and register a match haul of ten wickets as India defeated England by 336 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday.
This dominance is India's first-ever Test victory at the historic Birmingham ground and equalizes the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at 1-1.
India went into the second Test under pressure, trailing 0-1 in the series after a shock defeat at Leeds. Without pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and choosing not to include Kuldeep Yadav, India handed the new ball responsibilities to Akash Deep — and the 27-year-old stepped up in style. On a flat fifth-day surface, he consistently challenged the English batters, helping to bundle them out for 271 well before the final session.
With this effort, Akash Deep is just the second Indian bowler to take a ten-wicket match haul in England, after Chetan Sharma's 10 for 188, which was also accomplished in Birmingham, in 1986.
Support roles were played by Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar, each taking a wicket. Team leader Shubman Gill, who scored 269 and 161, achieved his first win as India's Test captain, completing a memorable personal and team performance.
Rain had held up the resumption of play on day five by 100 minutes, but it did nothing to stall India's momentum. The visitors dispatched the remaining seven wickets in a hurry, clinching a result that helped them break the haunting ghosts of the narrow defeat at Headingley.
