In a significant success in the war against terror, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament on Tuesday that three terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack have been eliminated in a joint operation carried out in Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation, which was dubbed Operation Mahadev, was conducted by the Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah identified the three killed terrorists as Suleiman, Afghan, and Gibran.
Shah identified Suleiman as a high-ranking Lashkar-e-Taiba commander and established that all three were on the security forces' "A-list" of priority targets. As per Shah, the three were responsible directly for the Pahalgam massacre where 26 innocent citizens lost their lives.
"I want to inform the Parliament and the country that the people who killed our citizens in Baisaran Valley, these three were among them and they were eliminated," Shah announced, praising the security forces for the successful conduct of Operation Mahadev.
Retelling the government's prompt response to the Pahalgam attack, the Home Minister told that he had flown into Srinagar within hours of the attack and presided over consecutive security review meetings. "We ensured that they couldn't escape through the border into Pakistan," he added.
Shah explained how actionable input from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) resulted in the operation. Human inputs suggested terrorist activity in Dachigam close to Srinagar on May 22. With high-tech surveillance equipment, the IB and the Army tracked the region, finally locating the suspects by July 22. A joint operation was launched, which resulted in killing the three terrorists.
To prove their participation in the April attack, Shah declared that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had previously arrested people who had harbored the terrorists. Those people later recognized the bodies after they were taken to Srinagar.
Additional forensic confirmation included equating the guns seized from the area with those of the rifles used in the Pahalgam attack. "Three rifles were recovered after the encounter — one M9 and two AK-47s," Shah said. "We airlifted these guns to Chandigarh in a special plane, where the test firing was done. The bullets fired from the guns were then equated with the shell casings at the site of the attack."
Standing in Parliament with a copy of the ballistic report, Shah went on, "I have the report here. Six experts confirmed independently of each other that it was a match. They assured me over video-call that the Pahalgam bullets and bullets of these rifles are a 100 per cent match."
He added, "There is absolutely no doubt. These were the terrorists who killed our innocent citizens."
Home Minister Shah also attributed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the military for their determination and strong action. "PM Modi eradicated the masterminds in Operation Sindoor. And now, our Army and CRPF have taken down the foot soldiers too," he said.
In a scathing remark aimed at the Opposition benches, Shah expressed disappointment at their muted reaction. “I had hoped that this victory over terror would be celebrated across party lines. But look at their faces — not a trace of joy. What kind of politics is this? Terrorists are dead, and you’re not happy?”
