A fabricated video featuring Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath purportedly endorsing a diabetes medication through artificial intelligence technology made rounds on social media platforms recently.
Following the video's dissemination, an FIR was lodged against the Facebook profile 'Grace Garsia' by Inspector Mohammed Muslim Khan from the cybercrime unit at the DGP office's cyber police station in Hazratganj. The FIR cited sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 511 (attempted offence) of the Indian Penal Code, along with section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2008.
The 41-second clip, extracted from a news channel segment, was shared on February 26 by the Facebook account 'Grace Garsia'. Garnering 225K views and 120 shares, the video featured thumbnails proclaiming, "Diabetes has been conquered in India. Say goodbye to diabetes."
The complainant detailed discovering the Facebook profile hosting a video allegedly featuring Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The manipulated video utilized AI tools to modify the Chief Minister's audio and voiceover, advocating the purchase of diabetes medication through a designated website.
The inspector asserted, "The video portrays the Chief Minister endorsing the medicine, purportedly developed by Indian scientists, and suggests that purchasers will be divinely honored upon visiting the website." He appended the link to the circulated video and the associated Facebook profile in his statement.
