Uttarakhand CM Dhami Takes Tough Stance: Rioters Face Consequences for Vandalism

During a recent cabinet meeting, the state government greenlit the establishment of a Special Claims Tribunal. This tribunal aims to hold accountable individuals involved in violent acts and to clamp down on those who fuel public unrest.

Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, emphasized on Monday the severe consequences awaiting those who incite violence and damage public property through their actions.

During a recent cabinet meeting, the state government greenlit the establishment of a Special Claims Tribunal. This tribunal aims to hold accountable individuals involved in violent acts and to clamp down on those who fuel public unrest.

This proactive measure follows a spate of violent incidents in Haldwani about a month ago, which included stone pelting, arson of vehicles, and the burning of police stations. The unrest stemmed from the demolition of an illegal madrasa in Banbhoolpura.

Addressing the press after the cabinet session, Chief Minister Dhami asserted that individuals disrupting the state's peace will now face repercussions.

"The cost of repairing public property damaged during riots will be extracted from the rioters themselves. Those who disturb the peace will face significant consequences, and the state will set a precedent that will resonate for generations, serving as a warning to those who tarnish the sanctity of Devbhoomi," stated CM Dhami.

Previously, there was no legislation in Uttarakhand to demand financial compensation from rioters. The establishment of the Special Claims Tribunal aims to bridge this gap and establish a deterrent against future lawlessness.

Under the jurisdiction of the District Magistrate, the Claims Tribunal will evaluate damages through a Court Commissioner, following which recovery will be initiated from the rioters in accordance with the law.
