TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan sent to 10-day police custody, Calcutta HC says 'no sympathy for him'

He slated the matter for consideration on March 4, the next hearing in the Sandeshkhali case, which was taken up suo motu by the Calcutta High Court.

Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam on Thursday unequivocally expressed the court's lack of sympathy towards Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, who was arrested 55 days following the assault on ED and CAPF personnel in Sandeshkhali.

In a stern tone, the Chief Justice remarked, “For the next 10 years you will have to remain very busy with your client. Probably you will have to appoint four to five juniors. This court has absolutely no sympathy for him.”

Meanwhile Sheikh Shahjahan has been remanded to 10 days of police custody by the Basirhat Subdivision Court in North 24 Parganas district.

Shahjahan faces charges under several non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code. The prosecution labeled him as an exceptionally "influential" individual during Thursday's proceedings.

In the report submitted to the district court, the police identified Shahjahan as the mastermind behind the January 5 attack on ED and CPAF personnel. The prosecution emphasized concerns that if released on bail, Shahjahan might resort to intimidating witnesses and tampering with evidence.
