Telangana Polls: Potential Shift in Muslim Support Towards Congress?

As polling day approaches, both parties are eyeing the nearly 13 percent Muslim voter base, with the BRS, aiming for a third consecutive term, banking on continued support while the resurgent Congress hopes for a repeat of the Karnataka scenario where Muslim voters played a pivotal role in its victory.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Congress party in Telangana are intensely vying for the support of Muslim voters, deemed crucial in 40 out of the 119 Assembly constituencies in the upcoming elections.

However, analysts suggest that unlike Karnataka, Telangana's scenario differs due to the BJP's rule in the neighboring state pushing Hindutva agendas, which led to apprehensions and controversies regarding Hijab, Halal, and Love Jihad. Telangana, under BRS rule since its formation in 2014, has maintained a secular image, steering clear of major communal issues or mob-related incidents.

The BRS is reliant on its alliance with the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), a significant player in Hyderabad politics with substantial influence across the state. MIM, contesting nine seats and supporting BRS in others, holds a significant sway among Muslim voters.

While MIM consistently wins seven seats, the Congress has nominated only two Muslim candidates besides one sitting MLA, Mohammed Shakil Aamir. Various socio-religious groups, aligned with either party, reflect a split in their support base.

The ruling BRS is highlighting its achievements in maintaining peace and communal harmony, emphasizing its expenditure of Rs 12,780 crore on minority welfare in a decade. It cites a substantial increase in the minority budget, educational initiatives, and financial support schemes for poor minority girls' marriages.

However, the Congress alleges a covert understanding between BJP, BRS, and MIM, impacting perceptions within the community. Congress leaders accuse MIM of aiding BJP and question its selective contesting of seats.

The Congress promises to elevate the minority budget to Rs 4,000 crore, ensure fair reservations for backward classes, and allocate funds for subsidized loans to jobless minority youth and women.

The debate centers on whether Muslim voters will retain allegiance to BRS or shift support to Congress, as Congress leaders criticize BRS for insufficient action and unfulfilled promises regarding minority development.

The upcoming elections stand poised as Muslim voters weigh their options, with the final decision remaining a critical factor in the electoral outcome.
