Tata's Assam Semiconductor Facility to Produce 4.83 Crore Chips Daily with Homegrown Technology, Says Vaishnaw

He added that this facility would also put much emphasis on advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, like Wire Bond, flip chip, and integrated system in package technologies. These will become very vital, especially for the automotive sector with the electric vehicle rollout, communications, and network infrastructure.

Union Railways, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that the Tata Group semiconductor plant, to be set up in Assam, will have a capacity to produce 4.83 crore semiconductor chips per day. It will likely create 15,000 direct jobs and up to 13,000 indirect ones once the facility begins its operation.

He added that this facility would also put much emphasis on advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, like Wire Bond, flip chip, and integrated system in package technologies. These will become very vital, especially for the automotive sector with the electric vehicle rollout, communications, and network infrastructure.

He said that the country is currently training almost 85,000 professionals with B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD qualifications in semiconductor chip design at 113 institutions, nine of which are located in the Northeast. 

He said that Act East policy of PM Modi had been instrumental in achieving this feat and construction of the Assam facility marked a major achievement.

It will involve an investment of Rs 27,000 crore and is likely to generate 15,000 direct jobs besides 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs. He said that the semiconductor industry is the backbone of the economy and will provide employment to lakhs of people in the allied fields.
