On Sunday, March 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi owed his sense of direction and philosophy of service to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The organization, according to him, taught him the country-first philosophy and influenced the way he lived.
In a podcast interview with AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman, PM Modi discussed the impact of RSS—broadly seen as the ideological support base of the governing BJP—on his ideological and personal growth.
"Through the RSS, I discovered a life of purpose. Then I was blessed to spend some time among the saints, which provided me with a very strong spiritual foundation. I discovered discipline and a life of purpose," he explained.
The Prime Minister also referred to the century-long commitment of the organization towards social causes, highlighting its role in empowering tribal communities, women, workers, and youth.
RSS has always focused on values and education, making sure the younger generation remains rooted while they learn useful skills that allow them to contribute to society, said PM Modi. "That is in every sphere of life, whether it's women, youth, or even laborers, the RSS has had a role," he said.
Talking about the organization's dedication to the country, he further said, "The RSS has committed itself with the discipline and devotion of a seeker keeping away from the limelight of mainstream attention. I feel fortunate to learn life's values from such a sacred organisation."
During the conversation, Fridman reminded PM Modi that he had joined the RSS at eight years old, a group that was famous for promoting Hindu nationalism. He then requested the Prime Minister to explain how the RSS shaped his beliefs and political vision.
Remembering his childhood days, PM Modi said, "In our village, there used to be a branch of the RSS, where we used to play games and sing patriotic songs. Something about those songs reached my heart very deeply. They awakened something in me, and that's how I came to be a part of the RSS. One of the fundamental principles that were inculcated in us at RSS was, whatever you do, do it with a purpose."
