It also suggested that some political leaders might have misunderstood the nuances of Hindi during the speech, but added that such comments were in "bad taste" and regrettable.

The controversy started when Sonia Gandhi made the remark outside Parliament, stating, "The President was getting very tired by the end. She could hardly speak, poor thing." This was followed by comments from Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Rahul Gandhi called the speech "boring" and criticized the repetition in the President's address.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) quickly condemned these remarks, accusing the Congress leadership of insulting the dignity of the President's office. BJP President J.P. Nadda demanded an apology from the Congress Party, calling the usage of the phrase "poor thing" an exposure of Congress's "elitist, anti-poor, and anti-tribal mindset." He urged Congress to offer an unconditional apology to President Murmu and to the tribal communities of India.

The exchange has ignited a heated debate, with the BJP stressing the importance of respecting the office of the President and highlighting the need for sensitivity in political discourse, especially regarding the country’s first Tribal woman President.
