Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from his former constituency, Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, as confirmed by a prominent party leader on Tuesday.
Ajay Rai, the Uttar Pradesh Congress President, reiterated the Gandhi family's commitment to the people of Amethi across generations and expressed assurance that Rahul Gandhi would indeed contest from this seat in the upcoming 2024 polls.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, Rahul Gandhi faced an unexpected defeat in Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani by a significant margin of over 55,000 votes. However, he secured victory from the Wayanad seat in Kerala, marking his entry into the Lok Sabha from South India with an impressive margin of over 4.31 lakh votes.
This recent announcement reaffirms Rai's earlier statement made in August about Rahul Gandhi's potential return to his previous stronghold in Amethi.
Accompanied by Mumbai Congress President Varsha Gaikwad and others, Rai criticized the ruling BJP, accusing them of exploiting the inauguration of the Ram Temple for political gains. He emphasized that the construction of the Ram Temple holds significance as a matter of faith rather than being turned into a grand political spectacle. Rai highlighted the BJP's attempts to leverage this event for electoral advantage in the upcoming polls, labeling it as an attempt to deceive the public.
