Situated at the source of the Godavari River, India's second-longest river, the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple holds a special place in Hindu mythology. The temple's distinctive feature is its three-faced Jyotirlinga, symbolizing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

Originally constructed by Peshwa Balaji Bajirao-III in February 1756 on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, the temple stands as a testament to architectural and spiritual grandeur. Its architectural symbolism is evident through gates in all four directions, each representing different stages of life according to temple scriptures.
