On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the committee to select the new CBI Director, attended by Rahul Gandhi, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
The session was held in the evening at the Prime Minister's Office.
This comes on the eve of the impending completion of the tenure of the present CBI Director Praveen Sood, which expires on May 25.
Sood, a Karnataka cadre IPS officer of the 1986 batch, was earlier serving as the state's Director General of Police (DGP) before taking charge as CBI Director on May 25, 2023.
The selection procedure for the Director of CBI is undertaken by the central government on the basis of suggestions received from a three-member committee constituted by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister, and the Chief Justice of India.
