"People of the Valley are playing a crucial role in maintaining peace and harmony in the region, and recently 8,000 people also carried out a rally. We are moving towards prosperity with the end of terrorism," said LG Manoj Sinha, while addressing the 'Chanakya Dialogues' organised by the Chanakya Forum, a Delhi-based think-tank, at the India International Centre (IIC) here. Sinha said that the earlier governments used to buy peace, while the present government is establishing peace in the Valley.
Grand Alliance to field JD(U) leader Manoj Kushwaha for Kurhani bypoll in Bihar

Senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, announced the name of Kushwaha as the candidate of the Grand Alliance. Kushwaha is a Janata Dal (United) leader and also a former Rajya Sabha member. "On the request of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, our party's National President Lalu Prasad Yadav has decided to give the seat to JD(U). The name of Manoj Kushwaha is finalised as a candidate from the JD(U). He is our candidate of the Grand Alliance. All parties which are part of the Grand Alliance agreed on his name," Siddiqui said.
Rajiv Gandhi assassination case: Six convicts released from prison

The Supreme Court on Friday had ordered the release of all the six life-term convicts in view of the Tamil Nadu government's recommendation. In May, the top court had ordered the release of A.G. Perarivalan, who was sentenced to life imprisonment over the 1991 assassination of the former Prime Minister.
Protests in Telangana against PM Modi's visit

The protests were organised in Hyderabad and Peddapalli district against Centre's "discrimination" towards Telangana and its "failure" to fulfill commitments made to the state. CPI national secretary K. Narayana was among those arrested in Hyderabad. Dressed in black and raising slogans of 'Modi go back', the protesters staged a demonstration.
'Those promising restoration of Article 370 in J&K are deceiving people'

At minus 10-degree C, world's highest polling station in Himachal sees 100% turnout

Tashigang, a village some 34 km from Kaza, is the highest settlement in the Spiti Valley close to the India-Tibet border. The village had 52 voters, most of them reached the polling station donning traditional attire. "I am participating in the election every year to keep the democracy alive," 78-year-old Sonam Dolma told the media.

The village is located in Bharmour Assembly, where even the polling party has to trek 14-km arduous journey to reach the polling booth, chief electoral officer Maneesh Garg said. At thepolling booth, 26 people are eligible to cast their votes situated in Sechu panchayat of the Pangi tribal area. The Election Department has set up 7,881 polling stations for the polls to 68-member Assembly.
Himachal polls: Nearly 18% voter turnout in first 3 hrs

Women turned out in strength in rural areas despite cold climatic conditions in the morning, said poll officials. Only 4 per cent voting was recorded in first hour of polling. There were minor hiccups as electronic voting machines developed snags at some places.
