New Election Commissioners Begin Their Duties

Newly appointed members of the Election Commission, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, officially assumed their roles on Friday, marking a significant development in the electoral landscape. Their appointment as election commissioners occurred on Thursday, making them the inaugural appointees under the newly enacted legislation governing the selection process for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and election commissioners.

The vacancies in the Election Commission arose following the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey on February 14 and the abrupt resignation of Arun Goel on March 8, creating an urgent need for capable replacements.
 

Both Gyanesh Kumar and Sandhu bring extensive administrative experience to their new roles, having served as Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from the 1988 batch. Gyanesh Kumar hails from the Kerala cadre, while Sandhu represents the Uttarakhand cadre, adding diverse perspectives and expertise to the commission's composition.
