Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 71 members of his Council of Ministers were sworn in at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday. This marks the beginning of the third straight term for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) under his leadership.
A total of 30 Cabinet Ministers, 5 Ministers of State (independent charge), and 36 Ministers of State make up the 71 ministers in the new combination government.
Even though the specific portfolios are yet to be announced, the nature and make-up of Modi's government for his third term reflect a wide national spread and strong participation by the alliance partners.
From the recently sworn-in United Cabinet, ministers hail from 24 states including those from 24 states, which show intentional attempts to give representational and regional diversity to Prime Minister Modi's Cabinet.
Eleven ministers from the NDA alliance partners also took the oath of office and secrecy on Sunday.
A total of 43 ministers have had at least experience of three terms in Parliament in the past, which amounts to significant experience being brought to the table.
Former Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Haryana's Manohar Lal Khattar have moved out of state legislatures into the Union Cabinet, marking the next phase in their political careers.
As many as 34 ministers have experience of serving in state legislatures, while 14 of them have served as Ministers of States in the past.
Socially, India's diversity is represented by the Cabinet, which has 27 ministers from the OBC, 10 from SC, 5 from ST, and 5 from minority communities.
This is historic in many ways for PM Modi, since this third term has made him the second Prime Minister of India to ever be elected for a third straight term, after Jawaharlal Nehru.
