A senior counsel of the Calcutta High Court, Pratap Chandra Dey, who is also the husband of Justice Amrita Sinha, lodged a complaint with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. In his complaint, Dey expressed concern about alleged pressure from the state police's CID to provide statements against his wife.
Dey further shared the same complaint with Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Earlier in the day, he had also submitted a similar complaint to the bar association.
The accusations revolve around the CID summoning Dey as a witness in a case and subsequently pressuring him to testify against Justice Amrita Sinha. The context is significant, as the bench presided over by Justice Sinha is currently handling important cases related to the multi-crore cash-for-school job scandal in West Bengal, particularly those concerning the assets and properties of directors associated with a corporate entity implicated in the central agency's investigation.
Dey claimed to have been summoned twice by CID, enduring a lengthy nine-hour wait during the last occasion at the CID office. Despite CID's directive to submit his mobile phone, Dey reportedly refused and issued a counter letter to the agency.
Moreover, Dey alleged not only coercion to testify against his wife but also attempts to entice him with enticing promises. The CID had previously filed complaints against Dey, accusing him of non-cooperation in the investigation—a case pursued following a directive from the Supreme Court. The unfolding situation underscores the complexities surrounding the legal proceedings and the personal dynamics within the legal community.
