Union Minister and senior JD(U) leader Lalan Singh on Wednesday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the worsening law and order situation in the state following the recent rape-cum-murder incident of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Singh attacked the state's lawlessness and said, "West Bengal is in total anarchy. It is unbelievable that the Chief Minister, being a woman, orders lathi charge, water cannons, and tear gas when protests are held against crimes related to women."
He even expressed surprise at the tactic of Banarjee: "It is ironic that Mamta Banerjee, who came to power due to this very kind of protests against the previous Communist regime, now is following the same repressive policy as her predecessors.".
Singh responded to the silence of the Congress leaders over the R.G. Kar incident as follows: "Congress leaders have ominously maintained silence on this grave issue. We moved the caste-based census during the INDIA bloc meetings in Bengaluru and Mumbai, yet Rahul Gandhi did not utter a word. It seems the Congress leaders will go to what extent in compromising for political gain.
Singh said, "The NDA remains united and is poised to grow even stronger."
The West Bengal government has faced sharp criticism from all quarters since the rape and murder case came into the limelight on August 9.
