Kerala's Entrants: George Kurian and Suresh Gopi in PM Modi's Latest Ministry Lineup

Amidst this political storm, Annamma, wife of Kurian, could not be happier with his new position. Kurian hails from Kottayam and is regarded as one of the humblest BJP leaders who is seen multiple times on the television news channels as a spokesperson for the party.

In a significant development, Kerala's political landscape witnessed the induction of George Kurian, the state's BJP General Secretary, as a minister in the third term of Narendra Modi's government. This happened along with the appointment of Suresh Gopi as Kerala's first BJP Member of Parliament.

Amidst this political storm, Annamma, wife of Kurian, could not be happier with his new position. Kurian hails from Kottayam and is regarded as one of the humblest BJP leaders who is seen multiple times on the television news channels as a spokesperson for the party.

Kurian entered politics in 1977 as a student activist affiliated with the Janata Party's student wing. He then joined the BJP in 1980 and remained loyal to the party ever since. In 2017, he became Vice-Chairman of the National Minorities Commission.

Despite being basically from Kottayam, George has had a very short period in Delhi and was serving as the Officer on Special Duty to the Minister of State for Railways, O. Rajagopal, during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1999-2004.

Kurian's ministerial entry was a surprise, as other names were making the rounds as the frontrunners. However, media organizations confirmed that Kurian attended a crucial meeting held at the Prime Minister's residence, and he had made his way.

Annamma, thrilled at her husband making it to the list, said they had not even thought of such an honor. Though Kurian had not called her to inform her about this, she is more than happy to tell the world about his hard work and commitment to the BJP and society. Annamma was a member of the Military Nursing Service, and she shared that Kurian has been working very hard.

On his not being available for the swearing-in, Annamma was not bothered much; she was more than happy that her husband finally got the recognition he deserved. "Nothing is being celebrated here as it is not that there is no one here. One of our children is in Canada. Another is studying medicine in Georgia," she said.

The gesture of reaching out to the Christian community extends only so much with the Kurian appointment; he is, after all, not even an MP. The fact that he is slated to get into the Rajya Sabha from some state, yet to be identified, only underlines how important his ministerial position is.
