Senior Janata Dal (United) leader K.C. Tyagi resigned as national spokesperson of the party on Sunday, citing personal reasons.
The party leadership has accepted his resignation. Confirming Tyagi's resignation and issuing a letter to this effect, the party's National General Secretary, Afaque Ahmed Khan, announced the appointment of Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, MP as new national spokesperson.
This decision followed after the instruction of Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) National President Nitish Kumar.
JD(U) letter states, "National President of Janata Dal (United), Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, has nominated RAJIV RANJAN PRASAD to the post of National Spokesperson. K.C. Tyagi, who was holding this post, has resigned due to personal reasons.
K.C. Tyagi is a veteran JD(U) leader who has been with the party since long and served at different positions. He is reported to be very close to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Tyagi was a common sight on most news channels, articulately presenting and putting across the view of the party. From clearly communicating the JD(U)'s stand on most issues to being an integral part of shaping the public persona of the party, Tyagi made several television appearances.
However, JD(U) sources said K.C. Tyagi had of late indulged in dissidence on several burning issues bringing disrepute to the party. One particular issue being the SC-ST reservation when the Supreme Court pronounced its order and the Israel Palestine conflict, the Leader of the JD(U) took a stand which is contrary to his party stand, and very close to the stance taken up by the leaders of the INDIA bloc.
The rapid sequence of events -Tyagi's sudden resignation, followed by the immediate appointment of Rajiv Ranjan Prasad as the new national spokesperson-confirms this may have been under pressure from the party. It forms one aspect of overhauling in the party machinery so that unity within is maintained and there are no public discrepancies in its declared stance.
