Kangana Ranaut Claims 'Emergency' Is Still Held Up by Censor Board

Ranaut, also a BJP MP representing Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, plays the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in the film which is scheduled to hit the screens on September 6.

Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut said on Friday that her film "Emergency" was very much stuck with the censor board, as against the recent reports of its clearance for release.

In a video message posted on X, Ranaut claimed both she and members of the Central Board of Film Certification have been threatened. She said there is pressure to exclude from the film the depiction of Gandhi's assassination by her security detail.

"Contrary to the ongoing rumours, 'Emergency' has not received its censor certificate yet. It was cleared in one go but with multiple threats, the certification is on hold," Ranaut said.

She elaborated, "Even the members of the CBFC are getting threats. We are being asked to delete scenes related to the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the riots in Punjab. It's not known what we are supposed to show hoota instead—a complete black-out? All this is so distressing and reflects poorly on our country."

On the same day, SAD served a legal notice to CBFC over the latter's clearance to the 'controversial' film. It had stated that the film may "foment communal tensions" and "sow misinformation."

The party has stated that the film trailer shows "incorrect historical facts that not only misrepresent the Sikh community but also foster hatred and societal discord."
