Jairam Ramesh Asserts Congress's Role in Himanta Biswa Sarma's Political Journey

Ramesh categorized Sarma and others who left the Congress as "opportunists," suggesting that their departure ultimately benefits the party by creating opportunities for committed individuals within its ranks. He dismissed Sarma's assertion that Congress members were flocking to the BJP as a "psychological game," citing strong responses from party leaders like Bhupen Kumar Borah, who filed a defamation case against Sarma for implying he would join the BJP.

In a recent statement, senior Congress figure Jairam Ramesh emphasized the pivotal role the Congress party played in shaping the career of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, asserting that Sarma owed his identity and position to the grand old party. Ramesh highlighted that during the tenure of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Sarma was entrusted with authority and responsibility by the Congress. However, Sarma's decision to defect to the BJP after the Congress lost power was deemed a betrayal by Ramesh.

Expressing confidence in the Congress's resurgence, Ramesh predicted a "reverse migration" of regional parties and leaders back to the Congress fold once the party returns to power at the Centre. He addressed the recent controversy surrounding an FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam, framing it as a fundamental issue related to taxation rather than a personal attack.

Regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Ramesh outlined the party's focus on economic issues such as price rise, income disparities, and protecting local cultures, contrasting it with what he described as the BJP's penchant for hype and psychological games. He criticized the BJP's funding mechanisms, alleging legal corruption through electoral bonds and highlighting the Congress's commitment to clean politics and fulfilling its promises to the people.
