An internal rebellion has started rocking the Trinamool Congress in the wake of the horror of a junior doctor gang-raped and murdered inside the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
Senior Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has demanded the duo's immediate custodial interrogation-the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Vineet Kumar Goyal.
"CBI must act fair. Custodial interrogation of Ex Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story. Why wall of hall demolished, who patronised Roy to be so powerful, Why sniffer dog used after 3 days. 100s of such questions. Make them speak," Ray posted on his official X handle.
Ray showed his signs of rebellion by declaring solidarity with the 'Midnight Protest March by Women in Kolkata' on August 14. He said that, like any other Bengali family, he has a "daughter" and a "little granddaughter," so he decided to join up with the protesters.
Political observers are seeing Ray's demand for custodial interrogation of Ghosh and Goyal as an attack on the earlier assertions made by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, who appreciated the police's investigation done by Kolkata Police's special investigation team. The case was transferred subsequently to the Central Bureau of Investigation last week by the Kolkata High Court division bench.
Although the CBI officials had questioned Ghosh for over 13 hours on Friday and Saturday, city police commissioner had not yet been called for questioning.
Ghosh was called again to its Salt Lake office on Sunday morning by the CBI. From August 18, the Kolkata Police have enforced Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code, 202 3, around R.G. Kar Hospital, which restricts a gathering, protest, or rally in the area for seven days.
