Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sent a stern message on India's water policy, declaring, "India's water will now only flow in India's favour," while speaking at the ABP Network's 'India @2047' Summit. His remark indicates a clear policy change in the face of increasing tension with Pakistan.
There's a lot of hype in the media nowadays regarding India's water. Listen, India's water will now run in India's style," Modi stated, reflecting a tough attitude following last week's terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
Following the attack, India announced on April 23, 2025, that it was temporarily suspending the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. The step reflects the fact that India would no longer be strictly bound by its terms of the treaty until there was significant improvement in bilateral ties.
Suspension has been seen as a strong diplomatic action aimed at raising issues connected with national security and responding to alleged Pakistani encouragement of cross-border terror.
Emphasizing India's development in several fields, the Prime Minister said, "India is demonstrating to the world how tradition and technology can go together. Today, we are one of the leading nations of the world in digital transactions."
In another historical announcement, Modi confirmed that the much-negotiated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United Kingdom and India has finally been signed. "A little while ago, while having discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Rodney Starmer, the deal was sealed," he confirmed.
