In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister stated,
"Respectful homage to the great freedom struggle hero Bhagwan Birsa Munda ji on his Balidan Diwas. He devoted his life to the well-being of the tribal brother and sisters and safeguarding their rights. His martyrdom and selfless dedication will remain an inspiration to the countrymen forever."

Born on November 15, 1875, in Ulihatu village of the Jharkhand region, Birsa Munda emerged as a revolutionary tribal leader in the late 19th century. With scant access to formal education, he rallied Adivasi communities against British exploitation and missionary and landlord influence. His movement was based on socio-religious reform, seeking to redeem tribal identity and counter colonial domination.

Devotedly respected as 'Dharti Aaba' or 'Father of the Earth' by the Indigenous people, Birsa Munda turned into an icon of empowerment and resistance. Though his life was brutally terminated at the young age of 25 while in British custody, his legacy lives on in the hearts of millions, inspiring both tribal and non-tribal Indians to date.

In 2024, to celebrate his 150th birth anniversary, PM Modi had kick-started year-long festivities on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas—November 15—by going to Jamui in Bihar. The Prime Minister had, at the ceremony, unveiled development plans worth more than ₹6,640 crore, and launched a commemorative coin and postage stamp in tribute to the tribal icon.

Reflecting on Birsa Munda's legacy, PM Modi said at the Jamui event that for way too long, these tribal heroes were ignored in post-Independence histories. He added that the current tributes are a sincere attempt to give long-overdue recognition to the lives and legacies of tribal freedom fighters.

As part of this broader acknowledgment, the Modi government had officially declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to celebrate the enduring spirit of tribal communities and honour their role in shaping India's independence and cultural identity.
