Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched another political attack on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Friday, sarcastically referencing the foreign citizenship status of Gogoi’s family.
While inspecting flood conditions in Sribhumi district, Sarma quipped, “In his family of four, three hold British citizenship. It’s fortunate he came to Silchar to assess the floods; otherwise, he might just decide to settle abroad any day.”
Continuing his pointed remark, the Chief Minister added, “I’m genuinely curious about the conversations at their dinner table — with three British citizens and only him as the sole Indian.”
These comments come amid escalating exchanges between BJP and Congress leaders ahead of imminent political events in Assam.
Sarma also alleged that a large share of pro-Congress social media activity during Assam’s recent Panchayat elections was orchestrated from overseas.
A minimum of half the social media handles supporting Congress were from Pakistan, and there were several more from Bangladesh. We have authentic intelligence, and the police will make an in-depth inquiry," he said.
Reinforcing his accusation, Sarma alleged Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI was supporting a specific candidate in the Assam polls — a subtle reference to Gogoi.
"Activities like these will rise only with the approach of elections. I have some more information that I will reveal on September 10. Congress supporters many of whom are not even in Indian soil," he cautioned.
Targeting Congress's declining popularity, Sarma pointed to the party's dismal performance among its traditional minority electors.
"Minority attendance at recent events held by the new Congress state president was very poor. In Lahorighat, where there are half a million minority people, only 5,000 attended a Congress rally," he claimed.
Comparing himself with Gogoi, Sarma also brought out the contrast in their political backgrounds.
"I wasn't born with privilege; my father never held the position of Chief Minister of Assam. I worked hard to secure my place. Contrary to some, all members of my family are Indian citizens, while his family has at least three British citizens," he said in an obvious reference to Gogoi.
