Freezing and Unfreezing of Congress Party's Accounts by IT Department and Appellate Tribunal

Ajay Maken, the treasurer of the Congress, initially revealed the "festival of elections" accounts during a press conference. He further informed that the tribunal had imposed a lien of Rs 115 crore on the accounts, allowing the party to utilize funds beyond this amount.

On Friday, the primary bank accounts of the Congress party were subjected to freezing due to an income tax demand totaling Rs 210 crore. However, following an intervention by an Income Tax appellate tribunal, the party was granted permission to continue operating these accounts until a further hearing scheduled for next week. This development brought considerable relief to the party, as it highlighted the adverse impact the freezing had on its political activities.

In defense of the party's stance, Vivek Tankha, a prominent Congress leader, presented arguments before the tribunal, emphasizing the critical importance of the party's participation in the upcoming electoral processes. Tankha underscored the necessity of unfreezing the accounts to ensure the Congress's full engagement in the "festival of elections." The tribunal is scheduled to reconvene next Wednesday to deliberate on the matter further before reaching a final decision.
