In a statement to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai declared that terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir will either face imprisonment or meet a grim fate in 'jahannum' (hell). He emphasized that the Modi administration has a firm stance against terrorism.
Rai was addressing a follow-up query from Congress MP Pramod Tiwari. He assured that recent terrorist activities would soon be curtailed and insisted that these threats would not prevail.
The minister reported that in recent days, 28 terrorists have been neutralized in Jammu and Kashmir, though the loss of some security personnel is regrettable. Since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, approximately 900 terrorists have been eliminated, according to Rai.
"Modi government has zero tolerance for terrorism. We will end terrorism. They (terrorists) will be either in jail or jahannum... I want to assure the House," Rai said.
Between 2004-2014 when the UPA was ruling at the Centre, there were were 7,217 incidents of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The number came down to 2,259 from 2014, when the BJP was voted to power, and July 21 this year, Rai said.
"These should not have happened. It is unfortunate but they (opposition) should not do politics over it," the minister said.
Rai reiterated the Modi government's unwavering intolerance for terrorism, promising that the scourge would be eradicated, with terrorists facing either incarceration or 'jahannum.' He also mentioned that during this time span from 2004 to 2014, when UPA was at the helm of things, the number of terrorist incidents was 7,217. Since the BJP came into power in 2014, it has drastically come down to 2,259.
He termed the act of opposition as politicising these sad moments and said that situation should not be used for political gain. Following the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh—in 2019, Rai noted that the number of casualties among civilians and security personnel has decreased by 67 percent, and terrorist incidents have fallen by 69 percent.
Rai assured the House that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are now experiencing a more peaceful environment with robust security guarantees.
