External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's security team got a major boost with two more bullet-resistant vehicles added to his convoy, official sources said on Wednesday.
This boost comes after a recent re-evaluation of his 'Z' category security status by central intelligence agencies due to the rising regional tensions and increased security concerns.
The recent upgrade is attributed directly to the aftermath of a fatal terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, where 26 people were killed. The incident, combined with the escalating India-Pakistan confrontation, has resulted in a heightened approach by Indian security agencies.
In the aftermath of the attack, intelligence agencies re-evaluated the threat scenario around the 70-year-old minister and advised increased protection measures for his travels.
Over the past few weeks, Jaishankar has been at the center of India's international diplomatic efforts amidst the crisis. He has led top-level talks with foreign ministers and international leaders regarding 'Operation Sindoor'—India's military campaign in reaction to the Pahalgam tragedy. His being in the forefront of directing foreign policy amid the turbulent times has made him a priority target for national security agencies.
This latest fortification is on top of an earlier October 2024 security elevation when Jaishankar was upgraded from 'Y' to 'Z' category protection—the second-highest in the government's VIP security structure.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which oversees security for high-risk individuals through its specialized VIP unit, is entrusted with the minister's security. The CRPF now secures around 200 prominent personalities, such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
India's central security gradations for VIPs are X to Z-plus, with the highest level of protection being provided by Z-plus.
