There was a ruckus in the West Bengal Assembly following the adjournment motion moved by BJP MLAs seeking a discussion to be held on the state's law and order situation.
The BJP had specifically intended taking up incidents of recent mob violence and attacks linked to Kangaroo Courts.
LoP in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari sought a statement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but she was not present in the House.
Adhikari then asked the Treasury Benches to depute another representative to take the discussion forward on her behalf.
BJP legislator Agnimitra Paul subsequently tabled the resolution.
But the BJP MLAs did not get the response that they had been expecting, said Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya.
Bhattacharya said that certain new criminal laws have been enacted, which restrict the jurisdiction of the State Government over law and order-related matters.
BJP legislators took to sloganeering which the Treasury Benches replied equally.
The situation reached a flashpoint with Trinamool Congress legislator Tapan Chattopadhyay allegedly charging towards the LoP, following which BJP members walked out of the House.
Squatted in the House lobby and raised slogans, holding posters, BJP MLAs A point raised by Adhikari: "Tapan Chattopadhyay tried to manhandle me in the presence of many people. While BJP legislators in Bengal get CAPF security, they are not allowed to enter the Assembly premise. So, the Speaker of the House will be responsible if any attacks are made.".
He was then denied by Chattopadhyay in regard to allegations by Adhikari of defaming his family and him during one of the recent public meetings in front of his residence.
