Delhi Chief Minister Atishi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Monday. This is the first meeting after she became chief minister of Delhi.
The PMO released a one-liner on X: "Chief Minister of Delhi, Atishi calls on PM Narendra Modi".
Atishi later updated on X with a post saying, "Met Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji today. Look forward to full cooperation between the Centre and the Delhi government for the welfare and progress of our capital."
Atishi took over as chief minister from Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal on September 17. However, the real beginning came on September 25 when she drew a similarity with the Epic Ramayana as she equated her situation like Bharat's refusal to sit on Lord Ram's throne as a manifestation of her personal bonding and allegiance to Kejriwal. "This will remain vacant till Kejriwal returns to power.", she pointed out to media through an empty chair.
Atishi is the third woman chief minister of Delhi, besides the youngest to assume the top position. Her ascension to the CM position followed Kejriwal's resignation as the Chief Minister after he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the liquor policy scam.
Atishi is not just Delhi's third female Chief Minister but also the youngest as she represents Delhi's Kalkaji constituency.
She took over in the backdrop of tension between the AAP-led Delhi government and the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre. Among the recent flash points, controversies around allotment of Chief Ministerial residence, Sheesh Mahal and projections from the Finance Ministry that said for the first time in its history, Delhi was facing revenue deficit.
Those issues continue to fuel the political rivalry between the two parties as Atishi steps into her role at a critical juncture for Delhi's governance and finances.
Delhi will go to the polls early next year unless the Election Commission prepones it with the elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand as demanded by the Aam Aadmi Party.
