Congress Slams June 25 Declaration as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’: A 50-Year-Old Issue Resurfaces

In a video statement, Tankha voiced his astonishment at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) revisiting a half-century-old topic. He argued that such political maneuvering would not aid the party but instead exacerbate its challenges.

Congress leader Vivek Krishna Tankha expressed his disappointment on Friday regarding the Modi government’s decision to commemorate June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’ each year. He suggested that this move is unlikely to build public confidence and might even erode support for the government.

“I am surprised to see a government notification, which says that the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, will be observed as a remembrance day. It’s a pessimistic approach and amounts to flogging a dead horse after 50 years,” said the Congress Rajya Sabha MP.

Tankha contended that the government’s declaration of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’ reflects the BJP’s anxiety and frustration, reinforcing the view that it is losing ground to Congress's campaign to ‘save the Constitution’ from oppressive forces.

“It should forget what happened 50 years ago, it should forget its recent electoral losses and focus on people’s welfare,” he critiqued the BJP.

Offering further counsel, he stated, “If you want to win the support of people, you should work for their betterment and not resort to such gimmicks.”

Additionally, Tankha recalled his father’s longstanding judgment concerning the right to life and liberty during the Emergency, emphasizing that dredging up old issues will not serve the country well and that the government should focus on future actions.

Earlier in the day, the Central government announced that June 25 would be observed as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Divas’ to honor the ‘inhuman pain’ endured by those imprisoned during the Emergency declared in 1975.
