Champai Soren Resigns as CM, Hemant Soren Set to Form Government

Sources in the Raj Bhavan said Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren staked his claim to form the government in Jharkhand with letters for support from its alliance partners. The decision was ahead of the meeting that went on Wednesday.

The previous Wednesday, Champai Soren submitted his resignation as chief minister of Jharkhand to the governor, CP Radhakrishnan, at Raj Bhavan in Ranchi. The simple reason behind this act is the need to accommodate Hemant Soren's resuming the position after stepping down over arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to a land scam.

"I assumed Charge as Chief Minister a few days ago and took charge of the state. But, with Hemant Soren's return, our alliance collectively decided to elect him as our leader. So, I have resigned now from the post of Chief Minister," Champai said while talking to media persons.

The Jharkhand High Court had granted bail to Hemant on June 28, nearly five months after his arrest on January 31. It had then cited lack of prima facie evidence on the basis of which ED had charged him for the offence.
