The forthcoming tabling of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on air pollution in Delhi is likely to ignite a bitter political fight between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to present the CAG’s "Performance Audit on Prevention and Mitigation of Vehicular Air Pollution in Delhi" in the Assembly on Tuesday. This report is anticipated to highlight the alleged failures of the previous AAP government in tackling Delhi’s air pollution crisis.
Aside from this, a total of 14 CAG reports on financial irregularities during the AAP rule will also be tabled, which could further fuel political heat.
BJP Leaders Criticize AAP Over Inefficiencies
Before tabling, BJP leaders had attacked the previous Kejriwal government with strong words, accusing the ruling government of corruption, misgovernance, and slack in fighting pollution.
Manjinder Singh Sirsa asked why the earlier AAP government had reportedly "suppressed" the CAG report.
"Why did they not let this report come out earlier, if they actually worked towards curbing pollution? The people of Delhi have a right to know," Sirsa remarked.
He also poked fun at the AAP government in Punjab for its advertising campaigns for liquor sales.
"The same Kejriwal model of development—cheap alcohol—is now being propagated in Punjab, just as it was in Delhi," he said.
Kapil Mishra also accused the earlier AAP government of financial mismanagement and corruption in different areas.
"The Kejriwal government plundered Delhi. The CAG report on the liquor policy had already exposed a ₹2,000 crore scam. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) incurred massive revenue losses. Now, this new report on air pollution will uncover even more corruption," he asserted.
BJP lawmaker Satish Upadhyay of Malviya Nagar said the same thing, adding that the CAG report will reveal how the people of Delhi endured poisonous air while the AAP government did nothing.
With the Assembly session poised to see some fiery exchanges, everyone will be looking at how AAP reacts to these charges and whether the CAG findings result in additional political and legal fallout.
