In the 2019 film, Pitt's Cliff Booth was the rugged and fiercely loyal stunt double to Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton, a faded Hollywood actor fighting to retain his career during 1969. Pitt earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role but it is unclear if DiCaprio will return for the follow-up.

This new project has emerged after Tarantino has put The Movie Critic, which was to be his 10th and last film on hold. The Movie Critic was pegged to follow a movie critic from the ’70s who wrote for a porn mag and, according to the novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt’s character Booth would have played a role in the critic’s unyielding love of cinema.Fincher’s upcoming movie marks the reunion of Pitt and Fincher, who have collaborated on multiple cult classics prior: Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Given those films, anticipation is already brewing.
