The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Haryana civic polls by a landslide on Wednesday, winning in several municipal corporations such as Ambala, Gurugram, Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, Faridabad, Yamunanagar, Panipat, and Sonipat.
The Congress, which fought the civic polls on its party symbol for the first time, could not make any notable impact, even losing in Rohtak, which is said to be the bastion of senior leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Some of the major findings include BJP's Raj Rani who swept Gurugram with 270,781 votes and left Congress candidate Seema Pahuja behind by 179,485 votes. In Faridabad, BJP candidate Parveen Joshi won with 416,927 votes.
In Hisar, BJP's Parveen Popli triumphed by 64,456 votes, whereas in Rohtak, BJP's Ram Avtar Valmiki won by a margin of 45,198 votes. Karnal witnessed BJP's Renu Bala capture the seat with 83,630 votes, beating Congress's Manoj Wadhwa, who received only 25,359 votes. BJP also won Yamunanagar, Ambala, Sonipat, and Panipat, which was won by Konal Saini with 162,075 votes.
An exception to BJP’s dominance was Manesar, where independent candidate Inderjit Yadav defeated BJP’s Sundar Lal by 2,235 votes.
Following the resounding victory, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini credited the BJP’s success to the “triple-engine government” and reiterated his commitment to fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat.’
Responding to the outcome, ex-CM Bhupinder Hooda played down the effect of the municipal body polls for the Congress, saying, "The Congress would have won in some places, but I did not go anywhere in the elections. I don't think the results would make a difference."
The BJP's grip on urban areas, especially Gurugram and Faridabad, confirms its political hegemony in the state. This comes after its historic achievement in the October 2024 Assembly polls, when it became the first party to win three consecutive terms in Haryana.
