BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla attacked the Trinamool Congress's move to observe July 21 as Martyrs' Day and instead called for the party to use the day for introspection rather than commemoration.
Poonawalla pointed to the rising cases of crime in West Bengal. He said, “TMC claims to commemorate martyrs on July 21, but in reality, it should be a day of introspection for them.”
He further alleged that the TMC was adopting a more aggressive stance than even the Left parties in terms of political killings and wide-scale violence during elections within the state. He even went to the extent of accusing the TMC government of twisting the concept of 'Maa Mati Manush' to justify bomb explosions, corruption, and crimes.
Questioning the allegiance of TMC towards the Left, Poonawalla challenged its participation in opposition alliances. He added that it was a contradiction where the TMC-which observes Martyrs' Day as protest against the "atrocities" of the Left Front government-at the same time joins forces with them in national politics.
The TMC observes the day every year on July 21 as Martyrs' Day. The day is reminiscent of the 13 people killed in police firing during a Youth Congress rally in 1993. It was during the tenure of Mamata Banerjee as the state's Youth Congress president.
