Bihar Mourns Loss of Senior BJP Leader Sushil Kumar Modi at 72; Nation Pays Tribute

Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi died late Monday night following a long battle with cancer at a hospital in New Delhi. He was 72. Modi's long political career included stints as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar between 2005 and 2013 and then again from 2017 to 2020.

Sushil Kumar Modi died at 9:45 PM at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, party sources said, adding that his last rites will be performed in Patna on Tuesday.

Modi had taken to social media last month, revealing that he was "fighting a six-month battle against cancer" and also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, reiterating his devotion to the nation, Bihar, and the party.

President Droupadi Murmu hailed Sushil Kumar Modi as an administrator and a person whose integrity in public life was an example. Prime Minister Modi praised him for his leading role in the party's rise in Bihar and his contribution during the passage of GST.
