Bengal Governor Vows Full Rehabilitation for Murshidabad Violence Victims

"Numerous houses have been gutted. Hence, the displaced families will return only when they are completely rehabilitated. I have visited here to see the situation with my own eyes, and after visiting, I will present a detailed report," the Governor told the media after visiting a temporary camp at a school in Malda district, where the victims of the violence are residing temporarily.

On Friday, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose promised that he would personally look into the total rehabilitation of families who were uprooted due to the recent communal tensions in Murshidabad district.

He also spoke about the nature of violence in Murshidabad, and explained that one community was targeted. "One group attacked first and another group was attacked. This type of violence has no place in a democracy. Such a thing is not acceptable in any civilization. I have interacted with people here, including kids. There is a fear that surrounds them.". It is not possible to live in an atmosphere that's ruled by so much fear," the Governor described.

Apart from the Governor, a delegation from the National Commission for Women (NCW) headed by chairperson Vijaya K. Rahatkar went to the same relief camp in the afternoon of Friday and spoke to the displaced people.

After visiting, delegation member Archana Majumdar levied serious accusations against the district police. "The relief camp cooks were driven out by the police. There is an attempt to rehabilitate the displaced without making arrangements for their security and rehabilitation. The women at the shelter don't want money or residences. They are demanding safety from central armed police forces. They want their dignity protected," said Majumdar.

Majumdar also blamed some religious groups of being targeted in particular. "Their houses in Murshidabad were torched, and rape threats were made to them. Even bodies like the Ramakrishna Mission have been kept out of the relief camps. The media too is being kept out of the camps to prevent the grievances of the displaced persons from coming out into the open," Majumdar added.
