In a unique departure from the historical stance of communism opposing religion, the State Minister of Cooperation in Kerala, VN Vasavan, who is also a CPI(M) state secretariat member, has referred to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as a 'Karma Yogi.' This statement was made during the ongoing state Cabinet yatra led by Vijayan, where the entire cabinet is traveling by bus to all 140 Assembly constituencies.
Vasavan went on to mention that a late Christian Bishop had characterized Vijayan as a gift from God for Kerala. Despite acknowledging the potential for misinterpretation, Vasavan clarified that he was not directly comparing Vijayan to God but merely echoing the sentiments expressed by the Bishop. He emphasized that Vijayan is a seasoned and influential political leader who has garnered widespread appreciation for his contributions to the progress of the state.
This departure from the typical ideological stance of communists towards religion, especially in acknowledging divine or spiritual qualities in a political figure, highlights the nuanced and diverse political landscape in the state of Kerala.
